Understanding Flood Risk

An unprotected standard airbrick could allow over 5,000 litres of water per hour to enter a property. It is a common feature of flooding that water will often pour in through an unprotected, low level airbrick, before it even enters the building via a doorway aperture. The anti-flood airbrick overcomes this problem and is designed to replace a standard airbrick.

Once installed it will automatically close and re-open with the rising and receding floodwaters. The product is passive and therefore needs no human intervention, making it an ideal way to protect vulnerable properties.

The primary points of water ingress into any property are its external doorways.

Flood Barriers are a cost effective option for door and other types of aperture defence.

Barriers can either be bought ‘off the shelf’ in a range of predetermined widths or can be ‘custom made’ to suit the specific property requirements.

A range of different fixings are available making for easy deployment in the event of a flood situation.

To protect areas with wider apertures such as driveways or garages, Flood Defender Walls with strategically positioned fixing posts can be used to span the full space width.

Flood Defender Walls can either be bought off the shelf in a range of predetermined widths or can be custom made to suit the specific property requirements.

The backflow of sewage through a property’s sewage system can be a major cause of damage in flood conditions.

The installation of a non-return valve will prevent the backflow of sewage back up the system into the property.

A range of different non- return valves is available.  Models that can be rodded to ensure optimum performance are a popular option.

In the event of flooding, water can enter into a property through outlet pipes including those for sinks, washing machines, dishwashers etc.

The installation of a backwater valve onto outlet pipes will prevent the flow of flood water back into the property.

Properties with cellars, basements or voids below the building can experience damage when groundwater penetrates sub floor voids.  

A sump and pump system sits below the ground floor to pump out water which enters through the ground. The pump removes water at a faster rate than it can enter.

If a sump and pump is located in a protected zone the outlet is routed to an unprotected zone.

A sump and pump system operates using a float switch for automatic activation as required. The system also has a check valve on the water outlet pipe so that the water does not flow back into the sump when the pump is shut off.

Sumps & Pumps are used primarily to pump water out of these areas although they can also be used to drain an external area that has been bunded against flooding.

Tanking polymer can be used for below ground waterproofing internally or externally.

It can provide protection from pressure water, ground moisture and dampness. It is extremely adhesive, micro porous and durable and is suitable for new or old structures.

Silicone can be used to successfully seal around external pipework, door apertures and windows to prevent water ingress through any gaps.

Airbrick covers are a reactive product, i.e. require manual deployment ahead of a flood event.

There are a number of Anti-flood Airbrick Covers on the market that utilise a range of materials and fixing techniques. They are manufactured in standard single or double or bespoke sizes.

Airbrick covers are a cost effective solution to stop the ingress of water. They are easy to deploy, taking only minutes to install.

It is important to remember Anti Flood Airbrick covers and vent guards used for gas or solid fuel appliances should only be used when they have been approved by a Gas Safe Engineer*. They should only be deployed when a flood event is imminent, and during this time your appliance must not be used. Waterstop is used as a water-based repellent to brickwork or stonework. It can be applied by spray, roller or brush to the walls of a property to help prevent seepage at times when floodwaters remain against a property for any length of time.

The most popular mitigation product available to protect these areas is purpose built flood doors.  The passive nature of the product means minimal human intervention in the event of flooding.  The door simply needs to be closed & locked.

Whilst on a daily basis flood doors operate as normal doors, they are highly engineered products that utilise comprehensive lock and seal systems to minimise the risk of water entering a property in the event of flooding.

Flood Doors are available in either UPVC or a Monocoque Composite material and can be manufactured to a range of width and heights.
